According to a recent publication, however, that honor should go to the automated timber mill invented by Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Before automated sawing, building a modest trading ship necessitated around ten lumberjacks working over three months,” writes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-powered lumber mills, an identical quantity of cut lumber might be manufactured within seven days.”
Owing to their rapid automated saw, which converted timber into planks using almost no manual labor, Dutch builders could build vessels more quickly than anyone else, which unleashed a century of Dutch naval, financial and cultural supremacy in Europe and the world.
